Intermezzo - Midwood

Pizza/Eastern European
$17 - split a pizza, intermezzo salad, and san pellegrino

So, it's a cool spot off of central near the old Swing 1000. The location's been a few different bars but hopefully this family owned eastern european restaurant will stick around. There are 10 tables and a cozy bar area so it can feel hoppin' pretty quickly. The bartender and waiter (eric) were really friendly and flirty, so it was easy to enjoy the experience. The menu is eclectic, unusual pizza options, eastern european dishes I didn't know of and then basic stuff like turkey burgers. The pizza we ordered was really good. The crust is softer than hawthornes but not as doughy as the old mellow or papa johns. We ordered something with sundried tomatoes and other stuff that I don't remember except to say it was yummy. Since the place is a little small, we had to wait around 20 minutes but for a Friday night at 7:30, this wasn't too bad. All in all, I liked it. it's cozier than hawthorne's and more familiar feeling. I would think it would be easy to become a recognized regular if you wanted to. I'd recommend it. oh, one thing to note. my friend and I ordered the 16 inch and ended up taking half home. I'm sure the small would have been a better choice but the waiter convinced us to go big. Just an FYI.

  1. I went to this restaurant last night with 3 friends. The pizza was quite good - however we may have been overly positive about the taste of the food after waiting over an hour for it. We ordered two large pizzas and about 40 minutes later the waitress came to tell us that one of the pizzas "had gotten stuck to the thing and the cook was going to start over. It shouldn't be but about 5 minutes." We didn't know what "thing" the pizza had gotten stuck to, we tried to ask her to bring the other pizza, but she walked away without hearing our question or offering any apology for the delay. With our glasses (and our stomachs) completely empty we waited another 20 minutes with no attention from the staff. After sitting for an hour she returned to tell us the food should be ready soon. We asked what happened to the other pizza we had ordered - it too had gotten stuck to the 'thing'. Turns out the 'thing' our pizzas were getting stuck to was the pan. She also commented they were short staffed and were having a difficult week. Our pizzas arrived an hour and 15 minutes after we ordered with no apology or offer to comp anything from the waitress. The pizza was good, but I will not be going back and will not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I eat out at least 3 times a week at locally owned restaurants in Charlotte. Some of the restaurants are very nice with white table clothes and other serve you at a picnic table. This was without a doubt the worst service I have ever experienced and will never return.
